WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The campaign for US Vice President Kamala Harris said on Sunday it had raised $200 million and signed up 170,000 new volunteers in the week since she was elected president.
US President Joe Biden completed his re-election bid on Sunday last week and authorized Harris to vote in November against former Republican President Donald Trump.
“In the week we launched, @KamalaHarris raised $200 million. 66% of that came from new donors. We signed up 170,000 new volunteers,” Harris' deputy campaign manager, Rob Flaherty, wrote on X.
Harris received the support of the majority of delegates at the Democratic National Convention, which may ensure that he will be nominated by the party as president next month.
Biden withdrew from the race amid questions about his age and health following a lackluster debate with Trump in late June. Biden has promised to remain in office as president until his term expires on January 20, 2025.
Harris, who is the first black woman and the first Asian American to serve as vice president, pulled in her first $100 million 36 hours after Biden's announcement, her office said.
Harris' takeover reinvigorated a campaign that had been sluggish amid Democrats' skepticism about Biden's chances of defeating Trump or his ability to continue in power if he had won.
Mitch Landrieu, the campaign chairman, said on MSNBC that Harris “had one of the best weeks we've seen in politics in the last 50 years”.
“This will be a very close race,” he said in an interview on Sunday.
