Silver Dollar City Apple Turnovers – Favorite Childhood Memory

One of my favorite childhood memories was visiting Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. Amusement rides, performing arts, candy shops, bluegrass music, Marvel cave, and more – it all made for unforgettable memories that I will cherish forever.

Every time we visited the theme park, we went to Nellie's Apple Butter Shop where we were greeted with amazing treats and amazing aromas. Rows and rows of apple butters, jams, syrups, and freshly made apple pies!

Paired with warm apple cider, the sweet, loose, triangular shape is a great start to any morning in Silver Dollar City.

Creating My Apple Turnover Puff Pastry Recipe

A few years ago, I found puff pastry dough marked down to 29 cents and started Googling recipes for ways to use it. When I found the apple replacement recipe, I was so excited that I could enjoy this delicious treat without having to travel to Branson!

The recipe did not disappoint! Soon, I was baking homemade applesauce in my kitchen (which already smelled amazing!).

Apple turnovers look great, but they're actually easy to make! They taste like apple pie but much easier and (in my husband's opinion) yummier! They are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a snack, and can be paired with coffee, tea, or apple cider. A perfect recipe for fall when apples are on sale.

Recipe Variations for Allergens

After I got married and used to cook for my husband who is dairy free, I modified the recipe a bit to make it safe for him. He loves these so much, and can eat many at once!

This recipe is very allergy friendly as it can easily be made without dairy, vegan, or gluten.

  • Dairy free: use the coconut oil option instead of butter.
  • For vegans: use coconut oil instead of butter and egg wash.
  • For gluten-free: use gluten-free puff pastry dough and gluten-free flour.
