(Reuters) – U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump took the stage on Tuesday night for their first and scheduled presidential debate ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

THE ECONOMY
“I believe in the aspirations, the aspirations, the dreams of the American people, and that's why I think and have a plan to build what I call an economy of opportunity,” said Harris.
“Look, we've had a very bad economy, because of inflation, which is known as a country buster,” Trump said.
“People can't go out and buy cereal or bacon or eggs or anything else. The people of our country are absolutely dying for what they've done. They've destroyed the economy,” Trump said.
ABORTION
“I promise you, if Congress passes a bill to restore the protections of Roe v Wade as president of the United States, I will proudly sign it into law,” said Harris.
“Now, I believe in exceptions to rape, incest and mother's health. … The states are now voting on that. … Each state is voting. It's the people's vote. Now it's not tied to the federal government,” Trump said.
THE ARRIVAL OF THE WORLD
“I'll tell you something, you're going to talk a lot about immigration at night, even if it's not the topic,” said Harris.
“Our country is failing, we are a failing nation,” Trump said, referring to people who cross the country illegally.
