The Biden administration has raised serious concerns about the collection of data by Chinese companies about American drivers and infrastructure and the potential manipulation of connected cars in other countries. The proposed law would ban the import and sale of vehicles from China that have an ignition key or automated driving system software or hardware.
The department plans to give the public 30 days to comment before the rules are finalized, the sources said, adding that the department plans to propose a software ban for the 2027 model year and a hardware ban to begin in January. 2029. The Commerce Department declined to comment on Saturday.
