Israeli strikes hit areas south of Beirut, Reuters witnesses said, a security source said
BEIRUT (Reuters) – At least two Israeli airstrikes struck areas south of Beirut on Monday night, a security source said, Reuters reporters saw two flashes of light and heard loud explosions coming from the neighborhood.
The Israeli army had warned an hour earlier that it would strike some buildings in the often congested southern areas, saying the armed group Hezbollah was using them as facilities and telling residents to leave.
Many residents fled the area in the past days after the Israeli strikes, but ended up sleeping on the streets of the city as shelters were full.
The families told Reuters they struggled to find taxis to get them out of the region quickly.
Fears of a global attack were heightened on Monday, when Lebanese troops retreated from the Israeli border and a US official said Israeli troops appeared to be about to enter Lebanon.
