Tokyo police have arrested a man they say threw Molotov cocktails at LDP HQ By Reuters

TOKYO (Reuters) – Tokyo police said on Saturday they arrested a 49-year-old man who threw what appeared to be Molotov cocktails at the headquarters of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) early this morning.

He also crashed his van into a security fence outside the prime minister's office, which is close to the LDP headquarters in Nagatacho, and threw what appeared to be a smoke bomb at police, said a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department.

The man, identified as Atsunobu Usuda, was arrested at the scene of the incident for disturbance at work, said a police spokesperson.

This incident happened during the campaigning for the national election that Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba called for October 27.

Japanese media reported that no one was injured in the incident, which happened before six in the morning (2100 GMT Friday).

Television footage showed about a dozen plastic containers in his car.

Local media quoted Ishiba as saying that democracy must not allow violence. He was in Kagoshima in southern Japan on Saturday.

LDP Secretary-General Hiroshi Moriyama said the party will continue campaigning as planned, according to local media.
