Musk says Howard Lutnick will ‘make a difference’ if chosen for US Treasury job Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Billionaire Elon Musk, who is an adviser to the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, said on Saturday that Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick will “make changes” if he is elected as the US Treasury Secretary.

Trump has not announced a nominee for the position, but Lutnick and investor Scott Bessent are the top contenders for the job and sources familiar with his thinking say Trump has been struggling to pick one of the two or consider another option.

Musk said Bessent is “a choice for business as usual.”

“Business as usual is bankrupting America, so we need to change somehow,” Musk told X. “It would be nice to hear more people think about this so that Trump can consider a response.”

Musk has been an influential figure in Trump’s circle and has been staying at the president-elect’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, as Trump forms his incoming administration.

In a surprise event Thursday night, Trump teased Musk about his post-election stay at Mar-a-Lago.

“I can’t get him out of here. He loves this place. And I love having him here,” Trump said.

At the end of the event, Musk took the stage.

“The community has given us a task that would not be clear, people have spoken, people want change,” he said.

Lutnick has been helping Trump with his reform efforts. He praised the economic policies of the president-elect, including his use of tariffs.
