Gunman shot dead, 3 police officers injured in shooting near Israeli embassy in Jordan By Reuters
AMMAN (Reuters) – A gunman was killed and three policemen were wounded after a shooting near the Israeli embassy in neighboring Jordan, a security source and state media said on Sunday.
Police shot dead a gunman who opened fire on police in the Rabiah area of Amman, state media Petra reported, citing public security, adding that the investigation was ongoing.
Jordanian police had earlier cordoned off an area near the embassy that was full of officers after gunshots were heard, witnesses said. Two witnesses said police and ambulances rushed to the Rabiah area, where the embassy is located.
The area is the center of frequent anti-Israel protests. The kingdom has seen some of the most peaceful rallies across the region as anti-Israel sentiment rises over the war in Gaza.
Police have asked residents to stay in their homes as security forces search for the suspects, a security source said.
Most of Jordan’s 12 million citizens are of Palestinian origin, either they or their parents were expelled or fled to Jordan in the war that accompanied the creation of Israel in 1948. Many have family ties to the Israeli side of the Jordan River.
Jordan’s peace deal with Israel is unpopular with many citizens who see improved relations as a betrayal of the rights of their fellow Palestinians.
