There was a time when Thanksgiving Day meant that supermarkets were closed that day. That’s not the case anymore. Even though it started three years ago when a few retailers decided to open their doors on Thanksgiving Day to get a quick start to the holiday shopping season, it is now the norm. Since then, more and more retailers have followed this trend. So if you’re looking for a list of stores that are closed on Thanksgiving, here it is.
Why Are Many Stores Open on Thanksgiving?
There are two arguments in this practice, both sides look at the issue in very different ways. Stores that are open on Thanksgiving Day (also called Gray Thursday or Black Thursday) argue that consumers like having an extra day to shop during the holiday season which gives them more flexibility. They also say that if their competitors are open for the day, and they fail to follow through, they will lose sales to them. In fact, for many retailers, Thanksgiving Day has become the new Black Friday where the best deals will be found.
On the other hand, those who advocate for retailers should stay closed argue that Thanksgiving is a holiday about family and thanksgiving and should be spent with the family. Vendors who open shops on this day keep their employees away from their families because they have to work. They also note that opening on Thanksgiving does not increase holiday sales for retailers, but simply drives away sales that shoppers would have made on Black Friday or another day later. In other words, Thanksgiving sales do not generate total sales, but rather come at the expense of other shopping days.
Stores Close for Thanksgiving
Although the practice is to open stores on Thanksgiving Day, even if only for a few hours, there are retailers who do not want to follow that. In fact, they are some of the biggest cheerleaders in trying to embarrass those vendors who opened Gray on Thursday.
