Australia says massive failure by Israeli forces led to aid workers' deaths By Reuters
SYDNEY – An Australian government review into the deaths of aid workers in Gaza found that a failure to follow Israeli military procedures led to their vehicles being attacked, Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said on Friday.
Israeli airstrikes in April killed 7 aid workers from the World Central Kitchen in Gaza, drawing widespread criticism from the United States and several allies. The dead included citizens of Australia, Britain and Poland as well as Palestinians and two citizens of the US and Canada.
An Australian review of the death released on Friday found serious failures to follow Israeli Defense Forces procedures, misidentifications and errors in decision-making.
The IDF called the incident a huge mistake that should not have happened.
Wong said Australia would hold those responsible to account fully, including criminal charges if necessary.
“The Advocate General of the Israeli Army is yet to decide on further measures,” he said in a statement.
“We expect that there will be transparency regarding the process and the decision of the Advocate General of the Army.”
