Hamas wants Gaza mediation based on previous talks with Reuters

CAIRO (Reuters) – Palestinian terror group Hamas on Sunday called on negotiators to present a plan based on previous talks instead of entering into new talks on a Gaza ceasefire.

Last week, the leaders of the United States, Egypt and Qatar called on Israel and Hamas to meet for talks on August 15 in Cairo or Doha to conclude a cease-fire agreement in Gaza and the release of hostages.

Israel said it would send negotiators to be part of the meeting. Hamas initially said it was studying the proposal, but now it has revealed that it may not enter into new negotiations.

“The organization asks the negotiators to present a plan to implement what was agreed by the organization on July 2, 2024, based on Biden's opinion and the resolution of the UN Security Council,” Hamas said in a statement.

“The negotiators should ensure this work (in Israel) instead of continuing with ongoing negotiations or new proposals that will provide details of the violence of that work and give them time to continue exterminating our people,” the statement said.

Israel launched its offensive in Gaza after Hamas fighters stormed southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and taking more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli figures.

Since then, nearly 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza, according to the health ministry.
