10 Ways to Save the World (and Money) in Less Than a Minute

So you want to help the environment, but you don’t think you have enough time? Here are 10 simple things you can do in less than a minute that will help the environment and save you money at the same time:

1. Use Half Price (time: none):

Try to use a fraction of the amount of products you use every day. Most of your everyday household products will work just as well if you use a fraction of what you currently spend. Other things you might consider using this method are laundry detergents, shampoo, detergents, etc.

2. Cold / Cold Shower (time: less than 5 seconds):

Turning the knob on your washing machine can save you about $100 a year in energy costs. Simply move the water knob to a cold/cold shower instead of a hot/cold shower. Since the biggest cost of washing clothes is heating the water, cold / cold washing can save a significant amount.

3. Apply a Drying Towel (time: less than 15 seconds):

Go get the most absorbent towel you can find and place it next to your dryer. Each time you put in a new load of clothes to dry, you throw in the towel. This absorbent towel will reduce the time it takes for the entire load to dry and will save about 10% of energy consumption.

4. Lower Your Water Heater Temperature

This takes less than 5 seconds gas water heaters – electric water heaters are very complicated and while repairs can be done in less than a minute if you are mechanically inclined, you may want someone to do it for you if you are not’ t): Most water heaters are set at a higher temperature than they need to be. Adjust your water heater down to 130°F and you will save 3% to 5% on your water heating costs for every 10°F the temperature drops. For gas water heaters, all it takes is a turn of the temperature knob to achieve this.

5. Adjust Your Thermostat (time: less than 10 seconds):

With summer just around the corner, adjust your thermostat up a degree or two and for every degree you do, you’ll save 3% to 4% on your home’s cooling costs.

6. Turn off the water when brushing/washing (time: less than 5 seconds):

The average bathroom faucet works at about 2 liters of water per minute. That means that every time you brush your teeth or wash your hands with a running tap, you use about 4 liters of water. If you brush your teeth twice and wash your hands three times a day, that adds up to 600 liters of water per month.

7. Turn Off Your Car Engine (time: less than 5 seconds):

If your car is going to hold for more than 45 seconds, it is more fuel efficient to turn off the engine and restart the car when you are ready to go.

8. Close the Cooling Vents (time: less than 5 seconds per position):

There is no reason to cool parts of your house that you won’t be in. Walk around your house and turn off air conditioners in every room where you don’t spend a lot of time. This will help your air conditioner run less (and thus save energy and money) rather than running all the pipes. Just make sure there is no temperature sensor in the room when you close the vents.

9. Replace the Light Bulbs (time: less than 30 seconds per bulb):

If you haven’t already done so, replace your regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CLF). CLFs last ten times longer and use only 25% of the energy used by conventional lamps. Over the life of each bulb, you should save about $40 in energy use.

10. Turn Off Your Lights (time: less than 5 seconds):

One of the easiest ways to save money and help the environment is to simply turn off the light when you leave the room. There is no reason to keep the lights on if no one is there.

It really doesn’t take much time or effort to make a difference. In less than 10 minutes, you can make a significant contribution to the environment and save yourself money at the same time.
