Is the Stock Market Open for Thanksgiving 2024?
Many people trade stocks regularly, thanks to the accessibility of mobile apps and web services. Since trading tools are readily available, people may think that they can buy or sell stocks at any time. However, this is not necessarily the case, as holidays can mean that the stock market is closed. Since November 28, 2024, is Thanksgiving, you may be wondering, “Is the stock market open on Thanksgiving 2024?”
If so, here’s what you need to know.
Is the Stock Market Open on Thanksgiving 2024?
No, the US stock market is not open on Thanksgiving.
According to their official websites, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the tech heavy NASDAQ – which use the same holiday schedule – are both closed on Thanksgiving. Therefore, there will be no trading activity on Thanksgiving Day. As a result, any trades that can only go through during active trading hours will not be completed until the stock market reopens on Black Friday.
However, international stock exchanges are often open. That exchange is foreign, and since this Thanksgiving holiday is not a universally recognized one, it will not affect the performance of foreign markets.
Additionally, retailers can place orders on Thanksgiving Day. Trading will not take place until the market opens on Friday.
Is the Bond Market Open for Thanksgiving 2024?
In 2024, the Bond market will open on Thanksgiving Day, but will close early.
While the bond market generally does not have a different holiday schedule than the stock market, Thanksgiving is one of those holidays where the hours are not normal.
Generally, bond market businesses align their holiday schedule with the recommendations made by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA). Although they are not required to follow the guidelines set by SIFMA, most do, and since SIFMA recommends closing at 2:00 PM on Thanksgiving Day, 2024, the bond market will close at 2:00 PM on Thanksgiving.
2024 Stock Market Holiday Schedule
As discussed above, both the NYSE and NASDAQ use the same holiday schedule. Although it is very similar to the federal holiday schedule, there are a few important differences.
Here’s an overview of the 2024 holiday schedule for the stock market:
- New Year’s Day (Celebrated) – Monday, January 1
